Bay Area students explore college opportunities at SFSU
The day-long partnership with 10,000 Degrees helped rising high school seniors prepare for college while introducing them to the resources, community and opportunities available at SFSU
More than 300 rising high school seniors from across the Bay Area gathered at SFSU on July 18 for a day-long College Access Summit designed to help students prepare for their senior year and take the next steps toward higher education.
Hosted by SFSU in partnership with 10,000 Degrees, The Summit welcomed students from eight Bay Area regions for workshops, campus tours, college planning sessions and opportunities to connect with peers and university staff. Every participant also receives guaranteed admission to SFSU if they choose to apply.
The event reflects a shared commitment between SFSU and 10,000 Degrees to expand educational opportunity and support students as they navigate the path to college.
“At SFSU, we believe that higher education should be within reach for every student who aspires to earn a degree,” said Lynn Mahoney, President, San Francisco State University. “Our partnership with 10,000 Degrees reflects a shared commitment to expanding opportunities, removing barriers, and ensuring students have the support they need to thrive from high school through college graduation. Events like the College Access Summit demonstrate what is possible when universities and community organizations work together to invest in the next generation of leaders.”
Throughout the day, students participated in interactive workshops focused on the college application process, financial aid, academic planning and selecting colleges that align with their goals. Guided campus tours introduced participants to the University's academic facilities, student services and community spaces, while resource sessions highlighted the programs available to support students' success throughout their college journey.
The Summit also provided opportunities for students to build connections with peers from across the region while engaging with 10,000 Degrees staff, SFSU faculty and staff, and volunteers committed to supporting their educational aspirations.
Kim Mazzuca, president of 10,000 Degrees, said the event demonstrates the power of partnerships that help students envision themselves in college and provide the resources to make that vision a reality.
For many participants, spending the day on a college campus offered a tangible glimpse of what their future could look like while reinforcing that they belong in higher education.
Through partnerships like The Summit, SFSU continues to advance its commitment to educational equity by creating pathways that expand access, reduce barriers and empower students to pursue their academic goals. Together with community organizations such as 10,000 Degrees, the University is helping more students see college not as a distant possibility, but as an achievable next step.
