Social Media Week to highlight empowerment

SF State's Downtown Campus will host two days of activities during Social Media Week, Feb. 13 to 17.

Social Media Week will come to SF State's Downtown Campus on Feb. 15 and 16.

The conference will feature prominent SF State alumni, speakers from Facebook and other Silicon Valley giants.

"San Francisco State University and our Downtown Campus are delighted to be a 'hub' for this important Social Media Week series. 'The Rise of the Social Economy' began in the Bay Area, and San Francisco continues to lead the world in integrating innovation and social responsibility with business growth and success," said Caran Colvin, interim dean of the College of Business.

Social Media Week features lectures and networking events in 21 cities worldwide from Feb. 13 to 17. The activities aim to highlight emerging tech trends and reflect on social media's potential for social change.

The symposium, which started three years ago and now attracts approximately 60,000 participants worldwide, takes place in a variety of locations in each city. SF State's Downtown Campus, at 835 Market Street, will host events on Wednesday and Thursday next week.

Wednesday's conferences at the Downtown Campus will focus on social media's role in politics, activism and empowerment, while Thursday will feature demonstrations and networking opportunities with local tech companies and entrepreneurs.

"It was really a perfect fit for us to be a hub on Wednesday because of the University's commitment to social justice," said Neil Cohen, a lecturer in the Department of Marketing and organizer of the event.

College of Business alums have contributed extensively to local tech startups, and a number of notable alumni will be participating. Wednesday's keynote speaker is Miko Matsumura (M.B.A., '04), an executive at Kii Corporation, which provides data cloud services for smartphones. Closing remarks on Thursday will come from Peter Horan (M.B.A., '81), an entrepreneur and investor focused on advertising in social media.

Most events at Social Media Week are free, though registration is required.
