Courses for Causes gives back to essential workers
Through the initiative, the College of Extended Learning at SF State makes free courses available to first responders and others
The College of Extended Learning (CEL) at San Francisco State University has been offering continuing education opportunities to first responders and essential workers through an initiative launched by the California State University (CSU): Courses for Causes. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, CSU Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE) is offering select free courses to support first responders, health care workers, working adults and community members.
Courses for Causes started during the summer of 2020 and continued throughout the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 Semesters. The program allows essential workers to get one free course through CEL and the second course at a 50% discounted rate.
“It’s the University’s opportunity to give back to those who have continuously played a vital role in our society,” said CEL Dean Alex Hwu. “They’ve served our communities, and now we can serve them by providing courses that help them advance their academic and professional goals.”
Classes are offered to first responders, essential workers, and licensed or certified health care professionals. This includes licensed vocational nurses, registered nurses, medical assistants, physician assistants, EMTs, firefighters and more. Essential workers such as grocery store employees, food servers and front-line staff in other lines of essential work are also covered in this program.
CEL provides the following program classes through the Courses for Causes initiative.
- Clinical Trials Design & Management
- Geographic Information Systems
- Human Resource Management
- Paralegal Studies
- Project Management
- Open University
