J. Paul Leonard Library begins phased reopening

The J. Paul Leonard Library will reopen in stages during the spring semester. On Monday, Jan. 23, the west side of the first floor will open, containing Book Pickup/Checkout.

There will be a 100-seat café that will open in late spring or early summer. In the interim, library users can use this seating area, located on the first floor, for study.

Faculty and students should continue to request books from the collection using the online catalog. Library users will no longer have to wait 24 hours to retrieve books. Books will now be available for pick up within four hours of the request during the Library's open hours.

Book requests are retrieved by library staff using the "robotic" Library Retrieval System, a computerized crane system used to access most of the Library's collection, and from the 3rd and 4th floor open stacks that will be available directly to users later in the spring semester.

Later in the spring semester, all areas of the Library and Academic Technology will open to the University community. Collections currently located at the Sutro Libraryon Winston Drive, a branch of the California State Library, will also relocate to the J. Paul Leonard Library in late spring or early summer.

Once fully open, the Library will include 50 percent more seating, 300 percent more group study rooms and twice as many computers. This translates to more than 3,000 seats for study and more than 250 public computers. In addition, there will be a 24-hour Research Commons area with six group study rooms and a Digital Media Studio for students with nine editing rooms.

Initial Library opening hours:
