SF State proposes nine majors for “impaction,” beginning fall 2014
Public hearings are scheduled for March 18, 19 and 20
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 19, 2013 – San Francisco State University announced today its proposal to “impact” nine additional majors, beginning fall 2014 semester. Students wishing to apply for admission into impacted majors would need to meet higher standards, a combination of grades and standardized test scores. Three public hearings are scheduled for March.
“San Francisco State University is committed to improving access to classes that students need to graduate in all majors,” said Jo Volkert, interim vice president for student affairs/enrollment management. “Program impaction allows the university to manage more effectively the available resources, allowing students to progress steadily through their academic program and graduate.”
The California State University (CSU) system, including SF State, faces enrollment pressures, and declaring a major, department or college as “impacted” is one tool to manage enrollment and ensure students are able to take the classes they need for timely graduation. A major may be designated as impacted when the number of qualified applications received by the University is greater than the number of students that can be served in available classes. SF State is planning to submit an impaction request to the CSU by the April 1, 2013 deadline for requesting impaction for the 2014-15 academic year.
First-time freshmen and transfer students who wish to apply to an impacted major will be asked to identify an alternate major upon submission of their application.
“All local students who meet the eligibility requirements for general admission will be accepted if they list an alternate major at the time they submit their application,” said Volkert. “If a student is denied entry into an impacted major, they will be accepted under their alternate major if they meet the standard CSU requirements.”
Currently 10 majors are impacted. The additional majors proposed for impaction are:
- Accounting concentration in business
- Biology
- Chemistry/biochemistry
- Communications studies
- Criminal justice
- Health education
- Kinesiology
- Sociology
- Undeclared with an interest in nursing
SF State will hold a series of three public hearings to discuss proposed changes to admissions guidelines for the 2014-15 academic year:
- Monday, March 18, 4 p.m., City College of San Francisco, MUB 140
- Tuesday, March 19, 4 p.m., SF State, Library 244
- Wednesday, March 20, 4 p.m., Jefferson Union High School District, 699 Serramonte Blvd., Galleria Room, Daly City
