SF State to hold 112th Commencement exercises on May 25

Giants President and CEO Larry Baer will deliver keynote address

SAN FRANCISCO, May 9, 2013 – More than 20,000 people are expected to gather to celebrate the largest graduating class in San Francisco State University's history at this year's Commencement on Saturday, May 25.

President and CEO of the San Francisco Giants Larry Baer will deliver the keynote speech, addressing 8,738 graduates and their guests. Community leader and philanthropist Adele Corvin will be awarded an honorary degree.

Cox Stadium will open to guests at 10:30 a.m. May 25. Graduates will line up by noon in the stadium for the processional at 12:15 p.m. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and end at 3:30 p.m.

Keynote Address

President and CEO of the San Francisco Giants Larry Baer has been recognized nationally for his visionary business and baseball acumen. His keynote address to graduates will focus on "the art of the possible in life." During his tenure with the Giants, Baer was a driving force in building the nationally lauded AT&T Park and was a key figure in forming the ownership group that in 1992 kept the franchise from moving out of San Francisco. Baer joined the Giants as marketing director in 1980, after earning Phi Beta Kappa honors at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1983, he left the Giants to attend Harvard Business School. He then worked at Westinghouse Broadcasting and CBS, Inc. before returning to the Giants in 1992. Baer was named team president in October 2008 and CEO in 2012. A fourth generation San Franciscan, Baer has received numerous honors for his contributions to the city's business, education and healthcare communities.

Honorary Degree

Lifelong volunteer, community leader and philanthropist Adele Corvin will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the California State University and SF State. Corvin serves as the president of the Morris Stulsaft Foundation, which supports Bay Area children with programs in early childhood education, participation in the arts, services for foster care children and youth, and pathways to work. A native San Franciscan, Corvin has served on boards of more than 20 organizations including the Bay Area United Way and the Jewish Community Federation of the Bay Area. She is the recipient of 20 awards for her community work, having been honored by such organizations as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the League of Women Voters.
