SF State announces new College of Extended Learning dean

Jose L. Galvan chosen to lead University's continuing education division

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 27, 2012 -- San Francisco State University has appointed Jose L. Galvan associate vice president and dean of the College of Extended Learning and International Affairs, effective Dec. 3.  

Galvan brings extensive leadership and international experience to the position after more than 20 years as an administrator and faculty member at California State University, Los Angeles. He is currently dean of the College of Extended Studies and International Programs and professor of applied linguistics at Cal State L.A.

"We are delighted to have recruited a leader with deep knowledge of extended education and international programs in the CSU setting and a strong academic record," said Sue V. Rosser, provost and vice president for academic affairs at SF State. "Dr. Galvan joins SF State at a key point in the development of our self-support educational efforts and expansion of international programs, as we seek new and better ways to advance the academic mission, contribute to the region's workforce development and generate revenue."

Galvan will be responsible for leadership of SF State's College of Extended Learning, which offers a range of professional development and academic credit programs on a self-support basis (student fees cover the program's entire expenses). In addition, the College delivers traditional coursework through summer/winter sessions and certificate programs. As associate vice president and dean, Galvan will also lead the University's international programs.

Galvan plans to explore how the College of Extended Learning can expand its offerings.

"It is a tremendous opportunity to come to an institution known for its international programs and to build on that," Galvan said. "San Francisco is such a global destination and we have a great asset in the Downtown Campus. There's potential for the College to expand into new areas, for example by training groups visiting from other countries, such as China."

Galvan has served in faculty and leadership positions at Cal State L.A. since 1990. Prior to his current role, he was dean of graduate studies from 2005-2008. Galvan is an active principal investigator with nearly $10 million in grants and contracts, and his research interests include sociolinguistics, second language acquisition and cross-cultural studies.

He has extensive overseas experience, including directing a three-year USAID-funded project to train science and math teachers in Egypt and coordinating academic outreach activities for Cal State L.A. in China and Korea.

In addition to his work at Cal State L.A., Galvan has taught and held leadership positions at the University of California, Los Angeles and Teachers College, Columbia University.

A native of Rio Grande Valley in South Texas, Galvan earned a B.A. in English, M.A. in applied linguistics and Ph.D. in psycholinguistics, all at The University of Texas at Austin.
