SF State leaders visit local churches on Super Sunday for 13th year

San Francisco State University leaders will visit three historically African-American churches Sunday, Feb. 25 to encourage students to pursue higher education as part of the 13th annual California State University (CSU) Super Sunday initiative. Leaders from all 23 CSU campuses will visit more than 100 churches across the state as part of the event.

The goal of Super Sunday is to foster a college-going culture in African-American communities and increase the preparation, retention and graduation of African-American students.

“Fifty years ago, African-American students and other student activists at SF State demanded representation in the college curriculum. After a long strike, their efforts resulted in the creation of the first College of Ethnic Studies in the nation,” said SF State President Les Wong. “SF State remains committed to tackling the issue of underrepresentation in higher education. Initiatives like Super Sunday are a step toward enhancing educational equity, especially in underserved communities.”

Alongside church leaders, SF State representatives will provide information to families about resources available to aspiring college students.

“A college education can transform the economic opportunities for students and their families,” said SF State Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management Maria Martinez. “The more students are prepared as they enter college, the more likely they’ll graduate. A college degree is the engine that can power future prosperity and ensure lifelong success.”
