San Francisco State University announces launch of the Estuary & Ocean Science Center
San Francisco, CA – Jan. 16, 2018 – San Francisco State University’s Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies has announced the launch of a new research and service organization, the Estuary & Ocean Science Center (EOS Center). The EOS Center will serve as one of the world's leading sources of scholarship on marine and estuarine environments, a dynamic, hands-on center for learning, an innovative training ground for future scientists and a trusted public source of knowledge about San Francisco Bay and the California coast. With the launch of the EOS Center, the Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies will change its name to the Romberg Tiburon Campus while the EOS Center carries on the environmental studies mission.
SF State, through the Estuary & Ocean Science Center, is the first and only institution of higher education with a marine science laboratory dedicated to research and scholarship located on San Francisco Bay.
“The Romberg Tiburon Center has a rich history of marine research, education and discovery dating back nearly 40 years,” said Karina Nielsen, director of the Center. “SF State’s EOS Center will continue to support scientific study of the sea, enhance public engagement with marine science and develop solutions to the environmental problems confronting coastal communities. At a time of rising seas when the ocean is warming and becoming more acidic, the need for research and education that illuminates the connections between science, society and sea has never been greater.”
The Center is home to the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and helps protect 3,700 acres of tidal marshes in SF Bay, and is also home to environmental science programs from the Smithsonian Institution. These include the Marine Invasions Research Laboratory of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) and the Marine Global Earth Observatory (MarineGEO).
