The new issue spotlights a unique 'Traysikel' spreading Filipino culture in the Bay Area, the University's first new academic building in 25 years, Alumnus of the Year Delroy Lindo and much more
The Fall/Winter 2021 issue of SF State Magazine begins with a bang thanks to a cover photo of the TNT Traysikel, a karaoke party on wheels co-created by Associate Professor Michael Arcega. Inside, readers will find stories about dedicated student activists, groundbreaking faculty members, world-changing alumni, a huge new addition to campus and much more.
In the issue’s lead feature story, alumna Houyee Chow opens up about the traumatic childhood experience that pushed her to embrace art — and eventually helped inspire the colorful LGBTQ mural she recently created for San Jose. Next up is Arcega and his TNT Traysikel, which delivers music, fun and Filipino culture throughout the Bay Area. Another story follows San Francisco State University President Lynn Mahoney into the classroom for a look at “History 120: History of the U.S. Through Reconstruction,” the course Mahoney herself taught this fall. And a fourth feature takes an in-depth look at the newly opened George and Judy Marcus Hall for the Liberal and Creative Arts, which provides a high-tech home for the Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts Department.
The online issue also features stories about the late LGBTQ activist and faculty member Sally Miller Gearhart, a student who crusaded against COVID in his native India and an alumnus who made it easier for current students to help the environment (while staying hydrated). There are also interviews with Alumnus of the Year Delroy Lindo and Professor of Asian American Studies (and one of TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world) Russell Jeung. And as usual the issue includes dozens of updates on recent alumni accomplishments.
In June, SF State Magazine was named the 2021 Robert Sibley Magazine of the Year by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Print copies of the new issue will be available on campus soon.
