More than 500 classes will be offered during Summer Session, keeping students on track for graduation
Visual communication design major Nella Ocampo is already looking ahead to the end of summer when, thanks to Summer Session, she’ll be free to begin a full-time job.
Ocampo recently learned that a class she took at City College of San Francisco didn’t fulfill a history requirement for graduation. She plans to take a U.S. history class and a life sciences class this summer to complete her requirements.
“Without Summer Session, I would have to come back in the fall, and I don’t know if I would be able to do that because of financial aid,” she said. “Taking summer classes is better than taking more classes during the spring semester.”
Ocampo will be one of thousands of students studying on campus this summer. About 6,300 students took classes last summer.
The University is offering 532 classes, 63 more than last summer. Among the total number of courses, 147 will be available online. All of the courses are either required in the respective majors, are electives in the respective majors or satisfy General Education requirements.
Under the state university system’s Graduation Initiative 2025, SF State has been working toward improving its six-year graduation rate.
“The University has focused on offering required classes that students may have had trouble getting into during other semesters,” said Ree'shemah Thornton, interim assistant vice president for Enrollment Management. “This will help with everyone’s goal of making progress toward graduation.”
The schedule for Summer Session courses is available online at: http://www.sfsu.edu/~admisrec/reg/regsched2175.html. Interested students can chose to apply for one or more of the four sessions offered: June 5-July 7, June 19-Aug. 11, July 10-Aug. 11 and June 5-Aug. 11.
Priority registration for continuing students begins on April 3. Tuition fees for undergraduates will be $1,587 for six or fewer units and $2,736 for more than six units. Graduate students will pay $1,953 for six or fewer units and $3,369 for more than six units. In addition, there is a campus fee of $189 for undergraduate and graduate courses regardless of the number of units taken.
Summer housing is available for students taking classes. Students can access the housing portal to apply starting April 10 at 10 a.m. Housing is in double-occupancy, two-bedroom apartments in the Towers at Centennial Square and includes a required meal plan. Many summer students are eligible for a State University Grant (SUG) and will pay lower tuition fees if they are enrolled half time. Undergraduates must enroll in six units to receive SUG to cover tuition for part-time status. Master’s students must enroll in at least four graduate units to receive a SUG.

Because of Summer Session, Ocampo says she can participate in the University’s graduation ceremony in May.
“I am really glad that they do offer summer classes. I am so ready and excited to graduate,” she said. “I recommend everyone consider summer classes, because it really shortens the time you need to get your degree.”
