Newest issue of SF State Magazine now available online
Alums teaching STEM in high-need schools among those featured in spring/summer edition
Teaching is in SF State’s DNA — an ongoing tradition explored in the newly released issue of SF State Magazine, available online at magazine.sfsu.edu.
The cover story takes us into a high school classroom where an alumna teaches biology to high-needs students, routinely tapping and adapting the progressive training and techniques she learned at SF State.
Also featured is news of another proven University program, Project Rebound, which helps formerly incarcerated individuals get a college education. A model of success, the program is expanding to seven California State University campuses. Project Rebound offered a hand up to Tracey Helton Mitchell, a remarkable alumna profiled in this edition. Mitchell, who transitioned from living as a heroin addict with an arrest record to earning multiple degrees from SF State, recently published a highly regarded memoir.
Another story spotlights alumna and former refugee Humah Bargzie Talai, who recently traveled across the globe to assist refugees on the Greek island of Lesbos. And in his first published book, Assistant Professor of Creative Writing Chanan Tigay puts to rest a 130-year-old biblical mystery after discovering a significant clue in the J. Paul Leonard Library’s Adolf Sutro Collection.
The magazine's online version also gives you access to recent campus news, an exclusive film festival Q+A, book reviews, updates from SF State alumni and friends, plus much more.
