SF State celebrates 10th year partnering with churches for college outreach
SAN FRANCISCO, January 28, 2015 -- San Francisco State University is partnering with historically African American churches for the California State University (CSU) college-outreach event Super Sunday, which is celebrating its tenth year. At churches around the city, SF State leaders will take to the pulpit to discuss the importance of preparing for and enrolling in higher education. Staff and student volunteers will also provide information about resources and support available to applicants.
"Super Sunday is an important opportunity not only to talk about the value of an SF State education, but to share the message that a diversity of students that reflects our city makes our campus an exciting place to learn," said President Les Wong. "By partnering with churches, we reach junior high and high school students as well as their extended families, who are best equipped to support young people as they plan their futures."
Super Sunday is a program of the CSU African American Initiative, a partnership between the CSU campuses and African American religious leaders with the goal of increasing college attendance among African American students. Launched at 24 churches in 2006, Super Sunday now reaches more than 100 churches and 100,000 churchgoers statewide.
In its 10 years, Super Sunday has made a notable impact on the lives of Bay Area residents. Tachelle Herron-Lane, an SF State graduate student in education, recalls a dramatic change in her life after connecting with SF State representatives at Super Sunday. "When I saw educated people come in and speak about college, I thought, 'I could do that too,'" Herron-Lane said. "If you look at my transcript that's exactly what you'll see: I had Fs and Ds, but after that, I had As and Bs. Super Sunday changed my life." Herron-Lane says she now volunteers at Super Sunday and often runs into students on the SF State campus that she has recruited.

What: SF State joins the San Francisco Alliance of Black School Educators to honor exceptional African American SFUSD students.

Who/Where: College of Ethnic Studies Dean Kenneth Monteiro will speak at St. Mary’s Cathedral (1111 Gough St.)
