Thank You and Congratulations

Dear colleague,
As we approach SF State’s 112th commencement exercises this Saturday, we collectively celebrate the achievements of 8,738 graduating students. These students reflect our aspirations, and we should all feel a great sense of pride both in each student’s individual accomplishments, as well as in our university community for supporting their pursuits, advancing their education, and providing opportunities for growth.
This has been my first academic year on campus. It has been filled with great discovery. I’ve been delighted to meet so many students, faculty and staff—members of our community whose contributions to SF State make it the very special place that it is. We have an admirable faculty and staff, who exhibit a passionate commitment to our students and to their respective areas of inquiry. And I continue to be struck by the intellect, creativity, and drive of our students. This is an extraordinary institution with a unique heritage and inspiring potential.
On behalf of the university community, let me congratulate this graduating class and wish them all the very best as they pursue their dreams. We are extraordinarily proud of you!
To the students who will return to the university to continue their studies over the summer or in the fall: we wish you a restful break and we look forward to seeing you again soon. Together, we will continue to support your success and fuel your aspirations.
And to our entire community: please have a safe summer. During your graduation celebrations, or as you unwind from a rigorous year, please be mindful of your well-being and that of your family and friends. We want you to return to us safely, whether it's next semester or at an alumni gathering years from now.
This has been a wonderful inaugural year—thank you all for so warmly welcoming me and my wife, Phyllis, to this remarkable community of learning.
