Campus Safety

The following e-mail was sent to the campus community on April 22, 2013:

Dear campus community:

Today a device purported to be a bomb was discovered in the Creative Arts building. This type of threat demanded an immediate police response and evacuation of the building.  The San Francisco Police Department and the University Police Department quickly ascertained that this was a hoax and that there was no threat. Accordingly, we provided an all-clear notice to the campus community.

We thank our public safety professionals for their diligent work. Threats such as these are felonies and the university takes such matters seriously. The investigation into this matter is ongoing.

Please know that the University Police Department is on heightened alert for suspicious activities, and that they are working vigilantly to monitor and protect the environment in which we all work and study.

Many of you have asked what you can do to help.  There is an adage in police work that I would like to share:  “If you see something, say something.”  Please call UPD at any time of day or night should you have suspicions or concerns about a person’s behavior or an object that seems to be out of place. UPD can be reached at 415-338-2222 or 911, and they welcome your calls.

I also invite you to visit the UPD website at http://www.sfsu.edu/~upd/index.html for information on crime prevention, emergency preparedness, or to update your contact information in the Emergency Notification System. You may also wish to follow the official university Twitter and Facebook accounts (find links at the university homepage) for informational bulletins.
