BECA students, faculty shine during competition
The strength of SF State's Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts (BECA) department was on display during the Broadcast Education Association's 2015 Festival of Media Arts, where students and faculty took home nine awards for their work, making SF State one of only five colleges and universities to win nine or more awards.

The festival, which takes place virtually through broadcast work submitted online and judged by panels of professionals and academics, featured 93 colleges and universities and more than 1,300 entries. SF State's ten awards were also the most received by any institution in California.
"We are so very proud of our faculty and students," said Scott Patterson, professor and chair of BECA. "BECA showed strength in the depth and breadth of our faculty and students by winning so many awards in so many different competitions. While BECA faculty and students frequently do well in this competition, never have we earned so many accolades in any one year."
Award winners from SF State were:
- BECA Lecturer Gina Baleria, best of competition, faculty interactive multi-media documentary/promotional/informational, for "Getting Lean: A Journey Toward Better Health Care"
- Associate Professor of BECA Jeff Jacoby, best of competition, faculty short-form audio production, for "Dark Ride, San Francisco"
- Associate Professor of BECA Marie Drennan, Award of Excellence, faculty web series, for “Karlie’s Angles – Poetic Justice”
- Shane Dalton Murphy, first place, student mobisode/webisode, for "Das Vi Danya"
- Max Maddox, Asger Ladefoged, Jarod Taber and Ben Mitchell, first place, student short form video or documentary, for "Taxi 2.0"
- Angeline Capati, second place, student mobisode/webisode, for "Jennylyn Episode 2: Desperately Seeking Employment"
In addition, six SF State students received an honorable mention for their work: James Baumann, Melissa Sabado, Adriana Quintero and Michael Bulatao in the student promotional video category; Louis Mensinger in the student animation experiment mixed category; and Amanda N. Font in the student radio newscast category.
