Commencement 2014: Graduate Hoods
San Francisco State University’s 113th Commencement will be held Friday, May 23 for graduate students and Saturday, May 24 for undergraduates. Each of the six academic colleges selects a recipient of a graduate hood, a distinction for that student’s exemplary work.
Here are the 2014 graduate hood recipients, their subjects of inquiry and future plans. Congratulations to all!
College of Business
Noah Linn Wheeler
Master of Science in Accountancy
Thesis: “Convergence of Accounting Standards”
Wheeler covered the history of and development of international accounting standards and provided analysis and predictions for recent efforts to converge U.S. accounting standards. He’ll soon be working as an audit associate at the firm Burr Pilger Mayer.

Graduate College of Education
Raynell Crews-Gamez
Master of Arts in Education (Equity & Social Justice)
Thesis: “Educational Attainment Trajectories of Children of Incarcerated Parents”
Crews-Gamez generated recommendations on how educators and school officials can reach out to children of incarcerated parents and have meaningful impact on their lives. Her goal is to be a principal or school leader in support of socioeconomically disadvantaged young women.
College of Ethnic Studies
Imelda Nuñez Muñoz
Master of Arts in Ethnic Studies
Thesis: “UndocuQueer Journeys: Life Stories of Rural Undocumented and Queer Latinas/os in the Salinas Valley, 1970s to 1990s”
Muñoz used oral histories and the Latin American tradition of testimonio to produce compelling personal narratives and portraits of undocumented queer youth. She will pursue her doctorate in Latin American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.
College of Health and Social Sciences
Wren Ariel Gould
Master of Social Work
Thesis: “Blond Bombshells and Fierce Revolutionaries: Race-based Normatives within Transgender Communities”
Gould explored race-based differences to help explain certain higher suicide rates in the transgender community, and how discrimination and community violence were risk factors. A longtime advocate for social justice, Gould seeks to be a catalyst for change.
College of Liberal & Creative Arts
Julie McClain Powell
Master of Arts in History
Thesis: “Comprehensive Examination in History of Europe Since 1500”
Powell’s award-winning work has been presented at conferences and published in historical journals, including her paper on iconoclasm in 16th-century Paris. She will continue studying history in the doctoral program at Ohio State University.
College of Science and Engineering
Diana Hernández Juárez-Madera
Master of Science in Physics
Thesis: “Simulations of the Dynamics of Coupled Gas and Dust in Protoplanetary Disks”
Juárez-Madera, who will pursue her doctorate in aeronautics and astronautics at Stanford University, is a winner of multiple SF State fellowships and has taught physics and astronomy to Bay Area middle-school students.
