University researchers study how virtual reality could be the next big fitness trend
San Francisco State University is a place for transformation; students learn, grow and become better versions of themselves. San Francisco State strives to exist on the cutting edge as technologies and economies evolve, too, preparing students for successful lives in a rapidly changing world. The latest edition of SF State Magazine delves into these many facets of adaptation — personal, professional and societal — as well as the ways the University itself is changing to keep up with (and ahead of) the times.
Our cover story examines how virtual reality (VR) technology can transform exercise, with SF State’s Kinesiology Department leading the nation in research into the health and fitness benefits of VR. Also featured is the new Mashouf Wellness Center, a state-of the-art 118,700-square foot fitness facility, which opened this fall and has changed the physical face of the campus and student life. Additionally, you’ll meet San Francisco State alumni who have shaped the nation’s alternative comedy culture, and hear University business experts discuss what’s next for retail as brick-and-mortar stores shutter.
The magazine’s online version also covers recent campus news; an alumnus who is the new superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District; a student’s efforts to enhance community through public ping pong; a professor bringing new insights to the study of American Judaism; and updates from SF State alumni.
