Media Advisory: SF State to hold week of events for presidential investiture

SAN FRANCISCO, March 5, 2013 -- San Francisco State University is holding a week of events March 9-15 to celebrate the formal investiture of Leslie E. Wong as the University's 13th president. The investiture ceremony will take place March 14.

During the week, students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends will participate in a variety of activities celebrating the University's accomplishments and looking toward its future.

Investiture week events will include:

"One Community" day of service

  • WHAT: President Leslie E. Wong and his wife, Phyllis, will join SF State students and the local community in a day of service in San Francisco's District 7, in partnership with the San Francisco Department of Public Works. Participants will meet on Malcolm X Plaza and be shuttled to project locations. An Arbor Day/Eco Fair will be held on the plaza throughout the morning.
  • WHEN: 8 a.m. – noon, Saturday, March 9
  • WHERE: Malcolm X Plaza, San Francisco State University, 1600 Holloway Ave., San Francisco

XLR8@SF State 5K Walk/Run on Campus

  • WHAT: President Leslie E. Wong and his wife, Phyllis, will join students, faculty and staff in a 5K walk/run around campus. Participants will meet at 8 a.m. on Malcolm X Plaza; the walk/run will begin at 9 a.m. A celebration with refreshments and music will follow in the quad. Awards will be given to the top finishers, as well as the most spirited team.

Symposium: Celebration of Faculty as Teacher-Scholars in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Education

  • WHAT: Panel discussions include: "STEM Education," "Beyond the Lab: Technology, Community and Health," and "Education Equity, Science for the Social Good and Preparing the Next Generation of STEM Leaders: The Metro Academies Initiative." An audience discussion and Q&A will follow the panels.
  • WHEN: Noon – 2 p.m., Monday, March 11
  • WHO: Panelists will be made up of SF State faculty, staff and students. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Sue V. Rosser will moderate. President Leslie E. Wong will attend.

  • WHO: Kevin Starr, University Professor and Professor of History at University of Southern California, and California State Librarian Emeritus

Investiture of President Leslie E. Wong

  • WHAT: President Leslie E. Wong will be formally invested as SF State's 13th president and deliver his inaugural address. The ceremony will include musical performances, a poetry reading and congratulatory remarks from students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends. President Wong will be presented with a special presidential medallion. A reception in Jack Adams Hall in the Cesar Chavez Student Center will immediately follow the ceremony.
  • WHEN: 2 ­– 4 p.m. Thursday, March 14.
  • WHO: President Wong, California State University Board of Trustees Chairman A. Robert Linscheid, CSU Chancellor Timothy P. White, and other distinguished guests

Celebration Dinner Honoring President Wong and 2013 Inductees to the SF State Alumni Hall of Fame

  • WHEN: 6 - 9 p.m. Friday, March 15
  • WHO: President Leslie E. Wong and his wife, Phyllis, along with distinguished guests. Hollywood director Lisa Cholodenko, award-winning journalist Al Martinez, deaf theatre artist Bernard Bragg and civic leader/philanthropist Judith Marcus will be inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame
  • WHERE: Julia Morgan Ballroom, Merchants Exchange, 465 California St., San Francisco
