Message from President Wong: Director of Athletics appointment

Shrieve Hawkins

Dear SF State community,

I am pleased to announce that Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins, a seasoned college athletics administrator with two decades of diverse experience and unique Gator "DNA," has been appointed San Francisco State University's Director of Athletics. Stephanie will report to my office and join our community on May 1.

Stephanie comes to us from Saint Mary's College of California, where she most recently served as Associate Athletic Director (AD). In that role and an earlier stint as the college's Associate AD/Senior Women's Administrator, Stephanie provided guidance to student-athletes, coaches, staff and the campus community while supporting college leadership on NCAA compliance matters. She has supervised multiple sports programs, academic and student services, sports medicine, strength and conditioning and internal operations. And, she has participated in fundraising activities while providing broad departmental leadership.

She brings a unique understanding of California public higher education, having served as a development director at the University of California, Berkeley and later as Associate Athletic Director/Senior Women's Administrator at the University of California, Irvine. At Berkeley, Stephanie successfully attracted support for scholarships, capital facilities and multiple programs. She long has been actively engaged in NCAA policy initiatives and also served on the West Coast Conference and Big West Conference executive committees.

Stephanie is uniquely suited to leading Gator athletics. Her first home was in a section of Park Merced that today is University Housing. Her father and mother each attended SF State, and her father (a San Francisco native), sister, stepfather, and aunt earned SF State degrees. Stephanie herself is a product of the CSU, having earned an undergraduate degree as a scholarship student-athlete at California State University, Fullerton. She also holds a master's degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation (Kinesiology) from Saint Mary's.

Our search committee and its co-chairs, Assistant Professor Nicole Bolter and Professor Jerry Shapiro, were deeply impressed by Stephanie's personality and presence and her vision for the student-athlete experience, which perfectly syncs with our mission as a DII program.

I am excited about the future of Gator athletics under Stephanie's leadership, and grateful to Professors Bolter and Shapiro and the entire selection committee for bringing to us such an exceptional candidate.

Leslie E. Wong
