Air quality and power outage campus update for Aug. 19

Due to smoke from fires in the region, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District is forecasting air quality on Thursday, August 20 will be unhealthy for the City and County of San Francisco.

Young adults, people who are active outdoors, children, and people with lung disease such as asthma should avoid prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion. All others should limit prolonged outdoor exertion. All scheduled outdoor activities including work have been suspended. Gator Groceries will be open and conducted indoors.

The campus has a supply of KN95 particulate masks for voluntary use. Faculty and staff who have been approved to work on campus may go to Environment, Health and Safety located in ADM 260 to pick up a mask between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily this week. For students living on campus who are sensitive to smoke, visit your local service desk to pick up a mask.

Sensitive groups should consider limiting outdoor activities. Children, older adults and individuals with heart and lung disease are considered especially sensitive and should remain indoors.

Air quality conditions may be viewed on AirNow.gov. We will continue updating the SF State News site as new information becomes available.

In response to the current heat wave, PG&E has notified customers to expect rolling power outages between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. daily through Thursday, August 20.

Please avoid using elevators to the extent that you can during these hours. If you need assistance, contact the University Police Department at (415) 338-2222. If you have an emergency, call 911.

The University will continue to monitor these situations and send updates as needed. Meanwhile, stay safe and take care.
