Message from President Wong: Athletics personnel change
I am writing today to inform you that Charles Guthrie, who has served as Director of Athletics at the San Francisco State for the last three years, has resigned to accept a new position at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay effective Nov. 1. During his time at SF State, Charles received recognition for increasing the profile of the SF State Gator Athletics and for the gains in improving SF State student athletes’ academic accomplishments and performance.
As you’re all aware, Charles is a passionate and talented athletic director. He has helped lay the foundation for the Division II program at San Francisco State University to be successful far into the future. During his tenure, both our men’s basketball and women’s track and field had their best seasons in decades. Charles always says he is most proud of the academic success of our student athletes, who graduate on time with team GPAs 3.0 and above.
We will initiate a national search to fill this leadership position on our campus. While the search is being conducted, former Interim Director of Athletics Bill Nepfel will be returning to the University to provide continuity and leadership. Bill has served in leadership roles at both SF State and the University of San Francisco, after a successful career coaching women’s basketball at USF.
I am confident in Charles’s abilities, and I know he is ready to lead the Division I athletics program at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. Please join me in wishing Charles all the best in his new position.
