Science building update: Partial re-open scheduled
Vice President of Administration and Finance and CFO Ron Cortez sent the following message to SF State faculty and staff today:
Dear Faculty & Staff,
I am pleased to announce the re-opening of the Science Building on Monday, April 28th. As you are likely aware, this has been no small endeavor. The tireless efforts of dedicated SF State faculty and staff have enabled us to reach this point, where the research labs, offices and other areas in the Science Building can be safely used again. I wish to thank all those involved in keeping relocated classes and labs running and making the building ready for use at such an early date. I would also like to thank everyone for their patience during this time.
In two weeks the University will commence moving faculty and staff back into the building. However, to prevent further disruption of instructional activities, classes and instructional labs will continue to meet in their current campus venues until the end of the spring semester.
It’s important to remember that the Science building’s design has not changed. The Science Building has not been modernized through this process. The challenges that researchers and educators faced prior to the building’s closure remain our challenges today.
One important exception is the University’s planned remodel of the 4 lower division chemistry labs in the Science Building. Although limited by the current building design, the updated labs will significantly improve lab accessibility, safety and utility for the immediate future. While the chemistry labs are being remodeled, the University will continue to use the trailers for lab surge space.
Move in planning is being coordinated by Capital Planning, Academic Affairs and Enterprise Risk Management. Impacted departments will be contacted by Enterprise Risk Management to schedule move in dates/times and assistance. Administration and Finance is continuing its assessment of other SF State campus buildings, and to date has completed environmental inspections of the Gym, Creative Arts, Mary Park Hall and Mary Ward Hall. The Business Building, HSS, and the Fine Arts building will also have complete environmental inspections by the end of June. All necessary improvements to the buildings will be made in a timely manner.
